This week we talked about the Muslim community in the United States and the world in general. We talked about how Muslims make up approximately 23% of the world’s population and the most populous Muslim nation is Indonesia. We also mentioned that the largest subset of Muslims in America are African-Americans. We also covered the topic of culture vs Islam. We discussed how Islam is accepting of different cultures and customs so as long as it does not conflict with Islamic principles. We then began to talk about how the muhajireen left Mecca for Medina and how the Ansar accepted them and helped them get settled and many times gave them half of their wealth since the muhajireen had left all of their belongings in Mecca. We then correlated that to the current situation with refugees and took what we learned from that story to what we can do to help refugees in our communities.
